Wind for the Win!

We have come down to the final few days of this legislative session. Sine Die–the last day–is next Monday, April 10th. Watch my next newsletter for a summary of all the major legislation we passed in 2023.

Offshore Wind My highest legislative priority this session has been addressing climate change. In particular, significantly increasing Maryland’s commitment to offshore wind. The Promoting Offshore Wind Energy Resources (POWER) Act, of which I am the lead bill sponsor in the House, finally cleared the House this week. Governor Moore has already shown his enthusiastic support of the effort to make Maryland a leader in the clean energy economy.

My bill supports the expansion of offshore wind power by increasing Maryland’s offshore wind goal from 2 to 8.5 gigawatts by 2031, initiating a state process to build coordinated transmission infrastructure, and investing in the full build-out of the existing offshore wind lease areas–all while creating jobs with family-sustaining wages and improving equity.

I have been working on this bill for over a year with a coalition of climate groups, labor unions, environmental groups, justice organizations, industry, and state agencies. They all recognize the huge environmental and economic benefits of transitioning away from a carbon-based economy to a clean energy future in a way that doesn’t exploit the planet or its people.

Next Walk and Talk: April 29th from 10:00 - 11:30 am I will continue my popular “Walk with a Talk” event. It’s a chance to hear updates from me and share whatever is on your mind–all while walking along delightful Sligo Creek Park. R.S.V.P. here.

New Playground Check out the fabulous new playground at the Hillwood Manor Neighborhood Park. Takoma Park Mayor Talisha Searcy and I even tried out the high slide! Plus, we got to see the beautiful new artwork celebrating the neighborhood in the community garden!

My Legislation Since Crossover, I have been working with my colleagues in the Senate to move my bills out of the Senate and on to the Governor’s desk. I look forward to sharing details with you in my End of Session letter.
