Beautiful and Terrible Times

This past Saturday began so joyfully. Seeing so many community members peacefully participating in No Kings events—here and all around the world—brightened my spirit. Then came news of the horrific shootings in Minnesota.
I grieve the devastating loss of life of Melissa and Mark Hortman and the impact of a political assasination in further eroding faith in our democracy. This assasination, following other recent political attacks and hate crimes, tears at the fabric of who are. I know you all join me in our commitment to work for the democracy we know is possible.
Just a few days earlier I had joined a host of other elected officials in a National Gun Violence Awareness event. While the most recent publicized shootings were politically motivated, the many survivors of gun violence at that event highlight the way gun violence tears apart families and communities on a daily basis. Let’s work creatively and courageously together to end all gun violence.

Power in the Park Shines Again
I sponsored another of my signature “Power in the Park”events last week. It’s a resource fair that provides lots of bright ideas—whether it’s to reduce your electric and heating bills, go solar, or live in healthier and more energy efficient housing.
Weren’t able to make it, but curious to know about the resources we shared? I have them listed on my website. Plus, keep an eye out: another Power in the Park is planned in White Oak this fall.

March with Me in the Fourth of July Parade
Please join me marching in the Takoma Park Independence Day parade. We will have costumes and banners, distribute lollipops and packets of basil seeds, and assert our unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Sign up here.
Sheila Hixson Breakfast Club
You are cordially welcomed to join me and my fellow D20 state legislators (Senator Will Smith and Delegates David Moon and Jheanelle Wilkins) to hear a recap of the 2025 General assembly, with time for Q & A. We will meet at El Golfo, 8739 Flower Avenue, Silver Spring, on Sunday, June 29th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The breakfast buffet is $20 per person paid to El Golfo.
