We Make the Road By Walking

Last Saturday several dozen people gathered for a “Walk and Talk” I organized in Sligo Creek Park.  People shared their fears, their anger, and deep desires to help change the direction our country is heading.

As we come together to resist the dismantling of our federal systems and to protect our community, a quote that has long inspired me came to mind.

“We make the road by walking.”

It comes from a book by Myles Horton and Paulo Freire.  One of its main themes is that education and collective action can empower people to challenge social injustices and make meaningful change.

I know many people are feeling powerless and unsure of just how we will get through this. “We make the road by walking” reminds us that even when we can’t see the whole path, we need to start taking action and working together to find a new way forward.

For my part, right now I am laser focused on Maryland’s legislative session and making sure we do everything we can in its remaining 53 days to protect Marylanders and maintain our commitment to building a more equitable, just and inclusive society. I am grateful for the efforts of people—here in District 20 and across the country—to rise up to protect Democracy and our sacred values.

Looking for ways to be involved?

Here are just some of the many groups educating and organizing for change:

Community Resources

Need help accessing services such as unemployment insurance, food assistance, health insurance, and other public benefits?  Check out my website for basic information.

I have also created a brochure listing some of the most commonly requested services. We are happy to send a supply of brochures (in English and Spanish) if you can help spread the word. We can also provide resources in Amharic and French, if requested.

My staff and I, as always, stand ready to help people access those services: email lorig.charkoudian@house.state.md.us or leave us a message at (410)-841-3423.

District 20 Night in Annapolis

I am biased, of course, but I think District 20 has the best, most talented, and hardest-working delegation in Annapolis.  You can decide for yourself by attending our annual “District 20 Night in Annapolis” next Monday, February 17th (Presidents’ Day) from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

At the event you will hear first-hand accounts on the legislative session from Senator Will Smith, Delegate David Moon, Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins, and me.

All attendees must register at bit.ly/D20Night2025.  Free transportation is available, but limited; sign up by Feb. 14th to ensure your ride.

Choices for Clean EnergyAre you looking for a new electricity supplier now that CleanChoice Energy is leaving the Maryland market?  I suggest community solar as a way to get 100% clean energy that is local and may save you money. You can find community solar projects near you at Community Solar and Neighborhood Sun.

I am also sponsoring the Abundant, Affordable Clean Energy Act to help meet our increased demand for electricity in ways that protect people’s pocketbooks and the planet.
